Ayatollah Khamenei— the Leader of the Islamic Revolution—appointed Ayatollah Amoli-Larijani as the new chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council, as well as a faqih among the Guardian Council members. The following is the full text of the decree:

In the Name of God, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful,

Ayatollah Haj Sheikh Sadeq Amoli-Larijani (may your services continue),
Considering the unique role of the Expediency Discernment Council in the management, persistence and consistency of the sacred Islamic Republic establishment, and in view of the passing of the striving scholar Ayatollah Hashemi-Shahrudi (God’s blessings be upon him) and the necessity for immediate order in the council, I hereby appoint you as the chairman of this important and influential council and a faqih among the members of the Guardian Council.
As previously mentioned in the new decree, in this term the council is also responsible for the important and essential task of applying changes in the structure as well as contents of this influential and important entity. Based on your imminent experience in the Guardian Council and your endeavoring, wise and sincere management within the Judicial branch, it is hoped that the expected responsibilities are performed perfectly, by the active and wise presence of the honored members of the Expediency Discernment Council; by effective performances of the secretariat and the secretary, while carrying out their responsibilities under the supervision of the chairman of the council.
Given the importance of responsibilities in the council and the Guardian Council, it is expected that in an appropriate time, by arranging the affairs in the Judicial Branch, you can concentrate on the aforementioned critical responsibilities.
I ask Allah the Great to bestow prosperity and His extensive assistance on you and your colleagues.
